Clay County, one of Florida’s last entities to approve charter schools, wanted the first one to set the bar for all subsequent applicants. Summit introduced an educational building concept complete with a successful and notable Charter School operator, offering a total package to the local School Board. Once approved, the site was determined based on the School Board’s current requirements for new school locations. Due to population swings and new residential development, the School Board realized their restriction in providing adequate education options and welcomed the new approved Charter School in meeting local resident needs. Built on an over-sized parcel, this new site provides room for future expansion should the enrollment and development in the immediate area warrant it sometime in the future. Summit, in designing schools to meet the growing energy concerns while minimizing occupant maintenance, introduced total use of exterior LED lighting plus synthetic playground turf in this project. The nightly floor maintenance due to playground sand tracked into the building, plus eliminating the replacement of bulbs in the high rise parking and stacking lane lighting, has improved overall maintenance at a reduced cost.
